If smokers can stay smokefree for this time, they are five times more likely to stop for good.
By supporting Stoptober in your area, you will be helping to amplify the national message and bring Stoptober to life within your communities. Stoptober also provides a valuable opportunity to raise awareness of the support available through NHS Greenwich Stop Smoking Services.
Officially Stoptober starts on the 1st October and runs for 28 days. Support will be available from now for smokers to enable sign up to Stoptober and to generate maximum awareness before October starts.
The health minister Norman Lamb, who stopped smoking recently, said the cost of the campaign was about £2m. He told BBC Breakfast, ‘It costs the NHS over £2.7bn a year, over 1,200 people are admitted to hospital every day as a result of smoking, so this is an enormous killer. With the number of lives that are lost, and the number of families that are destroyed as a result of that, surely to commit a bit of resource to a campaign that could result in saving lives is worthwhile’.
During the 28-day quitting challenge, there will be lots of support to help people on their quitting journey including a preparation pack, a text support service and even an app for real-time support.
Please note that smokers can sign up by searching ‘Stoptober’ online or via NHS Greenwich Stop Smoking Service by calling 0800 5875833 or texting ‘QUIT’ to 60060.
