Charlton Athletic Community Trust has been delivering sessions at Cherry Orchard estate in Charlton for over ten years now, in partnership with Charlton Triangle Homes.
Over the years, the sessions have developed and grown, offering initial engagement with young people from an area in Royal Greenwich known for high reports of anti-social behaviour.
This engagement has led to young people going on to gain accreditations, volunteering opportunities and pathways to employment through building up a relationship with Trust coaches.
The session, which involves football and coaching drills, at Cherry Orchard has developed substantially since it started and now offers a summer programme each year. The Trust also introduced a second weekly session to cater for the need and demand in the area.
Matt Horne, Greenwich Youth Service Partnership Manager, said, “Our sessions at Cherry Orchard have gone from strength to strength. When we began working on the estate the area was practically a no go zone with gangs and crime rife in the area. The partnership and funding provided by Charlton Triangle Homes and the Royal Borough of Greenwich has improved the area tremendously and provided much needed activities for local young people.”
