Calling young filmmakers

Monday 7th October 2013

Applications are now open for Young Film Academy’s BFI Film Academy Network, launching in Barking this November.

Young Film Academy (YFA) will be running a 9-week course of Saturday filmmaking sessions for 16 passionate young filmmakers aged 16-19, based at the Barking Learning Centre, with a showcase screening for the public at the Broadway Theatre in January 2014.

The BFI Film Academy is a new UK initiative providing opportunities and training for talented and committed young people from all backgrounds (aged 16-19) to develop new skills and build a career within the film industry. Led by industry experts, BFI Film Academy courses will cover every area of the film industry, enabling young people to develop the commercial and cultural knowledge and skills to help make a career in film a reality.

Run by film industry professionals, participants will benefit from their tutor's guidance and inside knowledge of how to break into the industry. The course contains workshops and masterclasses from some of the UK’s top film production companies (including screenwriting, producing and film marketing).

The course concludes with a showcase screening at the Broadway Theatre, Barking, organised and marketed by the participants, who will create their own distribution strategy for their film. Participants will have the chance to gain an Arts Award (Silver).

The most committed participants may be recommended by Young Film Academy to attend the BFI Residential Talent Campus in 2014, held at the National Film and Television School (NFTS), which will further develop their skills and signpost further education and training opportunities, and future employment within the film industry.

BFI CEO Amanda Nevill comments:

“The BFI is committed to developing tomorrow’s film audiences and talent and the BFI Film Academy is at the heart of our comprehensive strategy to give young people across the UK opportunities to engage with film. We’re proud that through the BFI Film Academy young people of all backgrounds are given a springboard to a career in film. Following an enormously successful inaugural year in 2012, the Academy is now establishing itself as a gold standard training and development programme with a vision for future growth."

This wouldn’t be possible without the backing of the Department for Education and we thank them and all our partners for their continuing support as we this year take the Film Academy to more people than ever across the UK.”
