Free courses challenge young people to learn new skills

Wednesday 9th July 2014

Young people in the Royal Borough of Greenwich have another chance this summer to take advantage of a range of free courses and activities during their holidays, thanks to the Stride into Summer programme.

Commissioned by the Royal Borough of Greenwich and coordinated by innovative youth charity Futureversity, the summer programme offers unique opportunities for those aged 10-19 (or up to 25 years for those with disabilities) who live, work or study in the borough. They will learn valuable new skills and develop their potential, while having fun and making new friends.

Run by industry professionals, the courses include a wide variety of subjects across six categories: Business and Careers; Skills for Life; Art and Fashion; Sport, Fitness and Wellbeing; Digital Media and Photography; and Music and Performing Arts. Among the topics covered are driving theory, cookery, making films, writing poetry, kayaking and presentation skills, to name but a few.

Cllr John Fahy, Deputy Leader of the Royal Borough of Greenwich and Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, said: “The Royal Borough of Greenwich is proud to be funding another exciting summer programme for young people. Once again, all activities are free to take part, and they provide a great opportunity for young people to learn new skills, develop confidence and express their creative talents.

“I would encourage young people to take a look through the programme and sign up. There really is something for everyone.”

Glenys Ruan, Programmes Manager at Futureversity said: “This is the third year we’ve been able to bring Futureversity’s summer courses to the Royal Borough of Greenwich. The interest from young people in the borough last year was phenomenal and we’re delighted to be able to provide more courses this year.

“As well as helping young people gain meaningful skills, our courses also provide employment and personal development support, as well as volunteering opportunities.”

Courses take place during July and August at different times and venues across Greenwich. Full course programme and booking are available at www.futureversity.org/greenwich or by calling 020 7247 7900.
